When Was the Microwave Invented?
It may seem hard to imagine, but there was a time before American kitchens had microwaves. History credits American engineer Percy Spencer with inventing the microwave after he noticed that a chocolate bar he had in his pocket melted as he passed in front of a radar machine he was working on. Being the curious person that he was, Percy then grabbed some popcorn and tested his hypothesis that the machine had melted his chocolate bar. When the kernels popped he knew he was onto something, but he wasn’t completely satisfied. It wasn’t until after an egg he held in front of the machine exploded in his hand that he determined that the microwaves emitted from the machine were indeed cooking the food. It took decades until microwave technology was cheap enough to begin to enter the home, but by the 1970s microwave ovens were becoming all the rage. Ever since then, we’ve been using microwaves for quick meals, reheating leftovers, and taking our home movie nights to the next level with microwave popcorn!
Today microwave ovens can be found in over 90% of American homes! When shopping for a new microwave you should first determine if a countertop microwave or an over-the-range microwave is what you need.
Countertop Microwaves: The most commonly purchased microwaves, countertop microwaves simply plug into an outlet and are ready to start cooking! These microwaves can be easily moved from one spot in the kitchen to another or from home to home as you move.
Over-the-Range Microwaves: This type of microwave is good for large families and come with other helpful features like ventilation fans and stove lights. Another obvious benefit to an over-the-range microwave is that they don’t take up valuable counter space. They do however require installation.
It doesn’t matter if you’re shopping for a college dorm microwave or a luxury kitchen microwave, RC Willey has you covered. Find a reliable microwave from trusted brands in a variety of finishes and enjoy the convenience of a great new microwave today!
